There's something magical about making chocolate with your own hands. Not following a recipe online, not assembling a kit—actually tempering, molding, and decorating real chocolate bars from scratch. That's what happens every weekend in our Bath workshop, and it's become one of the things we're most proud of.

If you've been curious about our Chocolate Bar Workshop but weren't sure what actually happens or whether it's "for you," let us walk you through it. Spoiler: it's absolutely for you.

What Actually Happens in Two Hours

Our workshop runs every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00am and 12:30pm in our dedicated chocolate workshop space. And when we say "dedicated space," we mean it—floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Roman Baths, proper chocolate-making equipment, and enough room for everyone to work comfortably without bumping elbows.

The Introduction

We start with the basics: where chocolate comes from, how it's made, why tempering matters. This isn't a lecture—it's more like a conversation over coffee. We keep it interesting, we answer questions, and we promise not to get too technical unless you want us to.

You'll learn why chocolate behaves the way it does, what makes Mrs Potts chocolate different, and the surprisingly fascinating journey from cacao pod to the bar you're about to make.

Making Your Bars

Then comes the fun part: you'll make four chocolate bars completely by hand. We guide you through tempering (the process that makes chocolate shiny and snappy), pouring it into molds, and the most enjoyable bit—decorating.

This is where people really get creative. Dried fruits, nuts, edible flowers, flavor extracts, different chocolate drizzles. Some people make matching bars as gifts. Others make four wildly different creations. There's no wrong way to do it, and our team is there to help if you want suggestions or need a hand.

The Tasting Intermission

While your chocolate bars are setting (chocolate is impatient, but even it needs a few minutes), we bring out a selection of our brownies and cookies. Consider it both a well-deserved break and a chance to taste what we've been perfecting in our kitchens.

This is also when the workshop shifts from "activity" to "experience." People relax. Conversations happen. Someone always asks for our brownie recipe (sorry, family secret). The energy is warm and unhurried—exactly what we want.

Packaging and Taking Home

Once your bars have set, we help you package them up in proper Mrs Potts wrapping. They look professional, they look gift-worthy, and they're entirely yours. Four chocolate bars you made yourself, ready to take home, gift, or (let's be honest) eat in the car on the way back.

Who This Is For

We get asked this a lot: "Do I need to know anything about chocolate?" Absolutely not. We've had everyone from complete beginners to professional pastry chefs, and everyone enjoys it for different reasons.

It's perfect for:

  • Date activities: Couples love this. It's interactive, it's not awkward like a cooking class can be, and you both leave with something you made together
  • Birthday celebrations: More interesting than dinner, more memorable than drinks
  • Solo adventures: Plenty of people book alone and end up chatting with other participants. It's a lovely way to meet people without the pressure of a networking event
  • Friend gatherings: Groups of friends celebrating, reconnecting, or just wanting to do something different
  • Parent-child bonding: Kids aged 10+ with a parent make great teams (children must be accompanied by an adult)
  • Tourists wanting an authentic experience: Much better than another walking tour, and you get to take home actual chocolate

What Makes It Special

Honestly? It's the combination of learning something genuinely new, using your hands in a world where we're always on screens, and ending up with something you're proud of. That's rare.

Our workshops are capped at 12 people, so it never feels crowded or impersonal. You get proper attention. You can ask questions. You can take your time. And if something doesn't go quite right (chocolate can be temperamental), we help you fix it. No stress, no judgment, just support.

The space itself helps. Those windows overlooking the Roman Baths? They're not just pretty—there's something about being in a historic city, in a beautiful space, making chocolate by hand that feels... significant. Like you're part of something bigger than just a weekend activity.

What People Say

We're proud of our reviews, but the feedback that matters most is the repeat bookings. People come once for a birthday, then bring different friends a few months later. Parents bring one child, then come back with the other because the first one wouldn't stop talking about it.

The most common comment? "I didn't expect to enjoy it that much." People think they're just signing up for a fun activity, but they leave having actually learned something, created something, and had a genuinely lovely time doing it.

The Practical Details

Workshops run every Saturday and Sunday at 10:00am and 12:30pm. They last two hours. The cost is £45 per person, which includes all materials, equipment, four chocolate bars to take home, and the brownie and cookie tasting.

Please note a few things:

  • The workshop space isn't wheelchair accessible (we're working on this)
  • If you have any food allergies, let us know when you book so we can accommodate
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult
  • Wear comfortable clothes—chocolate can be messy, though we provide aprons

Booking Your Spot

Workshops do sell out, especially during autumn and winter when everyone's thinking about gifts and cozy activities. We recommend booking at least two weeks ahead if you have a specific date in mind, though we sometimes have last-minute availability.

You can book online through our website or call our Bath location directly. If you're booking for a larger group or want to arrange a private workshop, get in touch and we'll make it happen.

Why We Do This

We started these workshops because people kept asking how we made our chocolate. But they've become something more than that—they're a way to share what we love about chocolate, to create genuine experiences, and to give people a break from their usual routines.

In a world of passive entertainment and endless scrolling, there's something powerful about spending two hours making something real with your hands, surrounded by other people doing the same thing. It's simple, it's joyful, and it matters.

We'd love to have you join us. Check our website for available dates, and we'll see you in the workshop soon.
